What are OKRs?

At its core, OKR is a simple yet profound framework for defining and tracking objectives and their outcomes. Think of it as a goal-setting methodology that helps individuals, teams, and entire organizations connect their efforts to measurable results.

Let's break it down:

O is for Objective: Your Objective is what you want to achieve. It's a qualitative, ambitious, and time-bound goal that should inspire and motivate. An Objective answers the question: "Where do I want to go?"

  • Example Objective: “Revolutionize our customer support experience.” (Notice it's aspirational and clear, but doesn't specify how yet.)

KR is for Key Result: Your Key Results are how you will measure progress towards your Objective. They are specific, measurable, and quantifiable metrics that indicate whether you've achieved your Objective. A Key Result answers the question: "How will I know if I'm getting there?"

  • Example Key Results for the Objective above:
    • “Increase Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT) from 75% to 90%.”
    • “Reduce average customer response time from 3 hours to 30 minutes.”
    • “Achieve a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 50 or higher.”

In essence, an OKR looks like this:

Objective:

  • Key Result 1: (Metric)
  • Key Result 2: (Metric)
  • Key Result 3: (Metric)

OKRs are typically set for a specific period, most commonly a quarter (3 months), but can also be annual for overarching company goals. The magic happens when these short, measurable cycles allow for rapid learning and adaptation.
